Mrs. Rosales’ fourth graders continue to work on spelling, vocabulary, as well as the Standard English grammar and usage techniques in their language arts studies. Writing becomes more creative with the use of metaphors, idioms and mythological allusions in vocabulary. In the texts we read, the students must determine the theme or main idea using supporting details and describe text elements such as the relationships between characters, events, setting and ideas. Students are asked to compare and contrast points of view from different stories and sources and to explain how an author uses evidence to support informational text.
During each week, our fourth graders are also busy with classes in social studies, religion and science—including our Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curriculum. In addition, the students receive time weekly for physical education as well as art.
In math, our fourth grade students keep very busy. We work on things such as place value and properties of operations, adding and subtracting fractions with like and unlike denominators and expressing fractions in decimal notation and comparing decimal fractions. The students will also work on constructing multiple types of graphs to represent a data set and classifying shapes by properties of their lines and angles. The class will also be taught to construct patterns with numbers and shapes according to given rules and to solve problems involving measurement and conversion within systems of measurement.
